Beads are small, decorative object raging from under 1 millimeter (0.039 in) to over 1 centimeter made of synthetic and natural material such as stones, bones, shells, glasses, plastics, woods, seeds pods, clay, ivories and coral or pearls with a small hole for threading or stringing.

Beads are some of the most wonderful inventions of mankind and trading it was one of the reasons humans developed language.

Beads are used to create jewelries, sculptures rosaries, used as decorative, sewn on to fabrics and of course as an indication of wealth or beauty.

What made the bead so special is the fact that it played a lead role in our exchange theory as it was used as money for most of the human history and in the theories of magic, fetishism and prayers, even till date, and now in the trends of fashion.

The name “Bead” is believed by some religious people to have comes from bede or bid, meaning to pray, as it is used as devotional or sacred object to keep track of prayers.

In the Chinese abacus, beads are used for counting. It is mounted in such a way that it moved from one end of the frame to the other, in ones, fives, tens hundreds columns, a skilled mathematician can count, add, subtract and divide with an abacus nearly as fast as someone with an electronic calculator even faster in some cases.

There are several types of finishing on the beads to mark its uniqueness. The finishings are as follows:

Lustre finish; a high gloss finish on a transparent bead.

Matte finish; a non-shiny texture, with a smooth velvety finish.

Supra finish; the frosted looking finish.

Firepolish finish; just as the name suggests, it’s a glossy finish on a heat treated bead.

Iris finish; this gives an iridescent coating.

Ghost finish; this is a matt finish with a rainbow effect.

Beadwork techniques are majorly loom and off-loom weaving, stringing, bead embroidery, bead crochet, bead knitting, and bead tatting.
