A ring is an ornamental band, worn on the different parts of the body especially the hands and legs for different purposes.
Women have enjoyed wearing rings throughout decades, for men, it has been a bit outdated in the last few years but recently, ring wearing has crawled back.
The finger ring is one of the most common rings worn on the human body. It also has different meanings when worn on each hand or finger. It is therefore important to understand the meaning of rings on the fingers.
Thumb Rings:
Wearing a ring in the thumb is believed and interpreted differently. To some, the thumb ring signifies willpower and is said to reflect the inner essence of a person.
Generally, it is also believed that wearing a ring on the thumb signifies strength, independence, and individuality.
However, the narrative is different for a lady. If a woman wears a thumb ring on her thumb, she is considered to be bisexual or lesbian.
For free-minded persons like me, putting a ring on my thumb would be a natural choice, maybe where the ring fits.
Index Finger:
Putting a ring on the active index finger also known as the pointer finger which is the most dominant finger symbolizes power, authority, or leadership.
Middle Finger:
Apart from the obvious hand gesture the having a ring in the middle finger symbolizes masculinity and emphasizes toughness, stoicism, acquisitiveness, and self-reliance. Middle finger rings are surprisingly uncommon because anything bulky on the largest finger can be quite inconveniencing for common tasks.
A ring on this finger is somehow complicated for the ladies. Wearing a ring on the middle finger is a surefire way to know a woman is not engaged or married however a lot of people especially in Nigeria wear their engagement rings on the middle finger at least to differentiate married ladies from the yet to. It is not a bad choice to wear a statement ring anyways.
Fourth Finger:
The fourth finger on the left hand is the widely known finger for the marriage ring. Having the wedding ring on the fourth finger is practiced in many countries and the tradition can be traced back to the Ancient Romans. They believe the fourth finger has a vein that runs directly to the heart, the Vena Amoris, meaning ‘vein of love’.
In the western countries, a band on the right fourth finger indicates engagement, while a band on the left fourth finger indicates marriage.
Gay and lesbian couples usually wear rings on their right fourth finger instead as a recognition mark of a monogamous relationship, and even marriage.
Divorced people also wear their divorce ring on this finger to take the place of the marriage band.
Last Finger:
Rings on the little finger is worn to convey a message of self-love versus relationship love. This means the person wearing the ring is not in a relationship with anyone but themselves and uninterested in pursuing marriage or relationship with anyone.
These days women use this ring to show their fierceness.
